Discipline: Diet and Physical

(February 2012)

Hello!  Today is my first blog!  Why am I blogging?  Well, I'm blogging because I am in need of support and sometimes its just great to type away to help myself with new challenges ahead.  What new challenges you ask?  Well, our entire family is starting a new path with healthy habits.  We are a very active family.  My husband, Phil and I regularly attend the gym.  I also love to run.  I just accomplished my first marathon this passed Saturday, March 10th.  What a fabulous experience that was!  I never knew my body could do such a task!  It's amazing how far you really can push yourself if you have the right tools, dedication and training.

I'm going to be honest with you.  When I started running, in the back of my head I thought... YES!  Now I can eat WHATEVER, WHENEVER I want!  No more counting calories, or yo yo diets!  So, as you can imagine I ate.... whatever I wanted.  Some days I ate healthy, some days... not so healthy.  I thought, if I just run a gazillion miles than I will be skinny Minnie and just enjoy all food, or should I say, junk food!  Boy was I wrong!  Just because you run run run, doesn't mean the weight will fall right off.  In fact, I didn't loose ANY weight.  I did notice a few inches around my legs disappear, I also have more definition in my calves, but that's about it.

Some of you are probably saying, what is her deal?  Why does she want to loose weight?  I really don't want to loose weight now, I want to train my eating habits like I've trained by body the passed year.  I have physically worked hard, shown extreme discipline and put in a lot of hours in the gym and outside.  Why can't I do the same with what I put in my mouth?  So, that's the plan!  Putting my discipline where my mouth is....

America today makes it so easy to eat bad.  With all the processed foods and fried products.  It's just EASIER.... It's amazing how we try to take short-cuts.  In the end, its just going to hurt us.

Tripp, my son, no longer drinks juice from a container bought at the store, he gets his freshly made from a juicer.  Now isn't he special!  He will still receive pastas and breads because he is still so little and growing strong. :)

So here is the new plan:

  • complex carbs from fruits (banana, oranges, apples, grape fruit, pears, strawberries, blue berries), slight yogurt, and protein mix in the morning (protein mix will help me feel satisfied and help repair muscles after working out)
  • mid morning snack: consist of nuts, small amount of fruit or veggies OR juiced drink (meaning I take veggies and a fruit then stick it in the juicer and viola - juice)
  • lunch:  protein (egg, chicken, tuna etc), a small side salad with low carb, fat, and calories dressing
  • mid day snack: no more fruit, I received all the carbs I needed in the morning to provide me energy throughout the rest of the day.  Nuts, veggies, or small protein such as hard boiled egg, or tuna salad.
  • Dinner: consist of strong protein meal, chicken, turkey, fish.. and large salad with low carb, fat and calories dressing.  The meal will consist of spinach in some way.  All of the sides will be vegetable based.
  • If I'm still hungry... Which I probably will be... guess what dessert is..... JELLO!!!! with some light whipped topping.

So, this is the plan!  The fridge is stalked, the chicken is freshly cooking in the crock pot and the juicer has made some juices!  I really hope to stick to this, but what I must remember is: This takes discipline, just like working out.  You want to look lean and healthy?  Working out only makes a 20% difference on how you look and feel, what you eat makes the true difference 80%.

  1. Yeah girl! I think a lot of us raised in the "convienence" age of processed foods are now realizing the saved time isn't worth it (and sometimes it doesn't even save that much time). I'm ALL FOR eating real foods! And I'm still trying to learn how to make my own of anything I possibly can (most recently, sandwich bread). I love being able to control the ingredients and know exactly what's in my food.

And way to go on your marathon!!! :)
